On a terraced plot we set the cabin on galvanised steel posts bolted into the stone retaining wall, with the floor frame levelled above the fall of the ground. The timber stays off wet laterite, water runs underneath in the March–April and October–November rains, and nobody cuts a new platform into a terrace that is holding the garden up.

Where the terrace is already level, a basalt or brick plinth is cheaper and looks better. We decide which during the site survey — in person in Kigali or by video — from measurements and photographs of the retaining wall, not from a plan.

Rain, sun and what the cladding has to survive

Rwanda gives a cabin two heavy rainy seasons and strong equatorial sun in between. We build the outside as a ventilated rainscreen: cladding, a drained cavity, then the insulated hot-room box. The cavity is invisible and it is what keeps the cabin alive — water that slips past the boards runs out at the bottom instead of soaking the insulation.

Cladding is a style choice with a maintenance consequence. Charred timber in the shou-sugi-ban tradition is our lowest-maintenance finish and looks deliberate against red brick. Pale thermo-aspen is warmer and lighter but wants re-oiling every couple of years on the sun side.

How the cabin reaches a hillside garden

Every outdoor cabin leaves our factory as numbered, crated panels with their fixings, seals and a spares allowance, after being dry-assembled and checked in full. On a Kigali plot that matters: panels are sized to the tightest gate and the steepest step on your route, and a flatbed parks at the nearest turning point while our crew walks them in.

Because the cabin has already been put together once, site assembly takes days rather than weeks. The plinth, the drain for the plunge and the cable from the board are finished beforehand, while the crates are still travelling.

Where the door faces

We point the door at the view and away from the prevailing rain, then put the cold plunge within three or four steps of it. The walk between hot and cold is the whole product — if it is long, wet and awkward, people stop doing it after a month.

What a garden cabin costs

A four-person garden cabin with one glass wall sits in the 4.6 – 6.8 million RWF band; the steel sub-frame for a sloping terrace adds 0.9 – 2.4 million, depending on the height of the fall and the wall it bolts into.
