Freshwater, not seawater — but still wet

Lake Kivu is fresh, so we are not fighting the salt corrosion that dictates everything in Mombasa or Dar. What we are fighting is persistent high humidity: timber that never fully dries, fixings that weep rust stains down pale cladding, and cabins that smell if they are not ventilated.

So: stainless fixings throughout even though the water is fresh, a generous ventilated cavity behind the cladding, and a run-on extract on anything enclosed. Charred cladding performs noticeably better than oiled pale timber on the lake side.

Wind off the water

The afternoon wind is consistent and it strips heat from a glass wall. We orient the glass along the shore rather than facing it, and we shelter the plunge and the bench, because a cold plunge in the wind is a short experience.

Hotels on the shore

Lakefront properties are in a visible upgrade race — new international operators are arriving on this shoreline. A sauna and plunge on a timber deck over the water is the photograph that sells the room, and it is also a genuinely good product in a place where the evening cools down.
