Saunas and plunge decks for Rubavu hotels on Lake Kivu

Freshwater, not seawater — but still wet

Lake Kivu is fresh, so we are not fighting the salt corrosion that rules every build on an ocean coast. What we are fighting is persistent high humidity: timber that never fully dries, fixings that weep rust stains down pale cladding, and cabins that smell if they are not ventilated.

So: stainless fixings throughout even though the water is fresh, a generous ventilated cavity behind the cladding, and a run-on extract on anything enclosed. Charred cladding performs noticeably better than oiled pale timber on the lake side.

Wind off the water

The afternoon wind is consistent and strips heat from a glass wall. We orient the glass along the shore rather than square to it, and shelter the plunge and the bench, because a cold plunge in the wind is a short experience.

Evenings on the shore cool quickly once the sun drops behind the hills across the lake, which is exactly when guests want the sauna. A deck cabin with a covered porch keeps the plunge usable in the rain as well.

Hotels on the shore

Lakefront properties here are in a visible upgrade race. A sauna and a plunge on a timber deck over the water is the photograph that sells the room, and it is also a genuinely good product in a place where evenings cool down. Suites for hotels are planned on our hotel and lodge spa page.

Rubavu budget and the road from Kigali

A four-person sauna with one glass wall is 4.6 – 6.8 million RWF; a plunge with a 2 HP chiller for a hotel deck is 5.3 – 7.4 million; a small hotel thermal suite is 24 – 52 million. Rubavu counts as upcountry for service, so visits carry a 0.2 – 0.6 million surcharge, shared between sites booked in the same week.

The paved road from Kigali takes around three hours, and crates can come straight to site once cleared at the Kigali Logistics Platform. For a property reached by boat, loads are split to what the boat can carry and landed at your jetty.
