Altitude changes the arithmetic again

Higher than Kigali means thinner air and colder nights, and a heater sized on Kigali's 1.12 correction will underperform here. We recalculate on the lodge's actual elevation and add capacity, and we insulate harder than in the city — floor as well as walls, because these buildings sit on cold ground.

Night temperatures in Kinigi regularly fall into single figures. That is a gift for a cold plunge, which barely needs a chiller, and a warning for pipework, which has to run inside the insulated envelope.

Wood fire earns its place here

This is the one part of Rwanda where we actively recommend a wood-fired heater. Firewood is on site, the fire is part of the evening for guests who have been outdoors all day, and it works through a power cut — which matters more at a remote lodge than in the city.

We still run a supply for the lighting, the controls and the extract, and fit a proper flue with a spark arrestor, because a stove in a timber room is only safe when those details are right.

Built around trekking, not a closed season

Gorilla trekking runs all year, so there is no closed season to renovate in. We build in phases around occupancy, work in agreed windows and keep the site tidy enough to sit in view of guests.

Access and delivery

Musanze town is about two hours from Kigali on the paved road north, and Kinigi another half hour towards the park. The last stretch to many lodges is a volcanic-stone track, steep in places and slick in the rains, so crates are sized for a smaller truck or a trailer on the final leg.

Work near the park boundary follows the lodge's own rules and the park authority's, which usually means limited noise, no open burning and every offcut taken away. Because each cabin arrives already dry-assembled and checked in the factory, most of the site work is bolting together rather than cutting — quiet, quick and clean.

Do we need a bigger heater up here?

Yes. Thinner air and colder ambient both cost you capacity, so we recalculate on your actual elevation rather than using Kigali's figure.

Wood-fired or electric at a lodge?

Wood-fired in most cases. Fuel is on site, guests love it, and it works when the power does not.

How much extra insulation does a Kinigi cabin get?

We insulate the floor as well as the walls and ceiling, and run every water pipe inside the insulated envelope, because the ground and the night air are both cold at this altitude.

Can the work fit around trekking days?

Yes. We agree working windows with the lodge, keep the site screened from guest areas and commission room by room, so part of the suite can open early.
