Altitude changes the arithmetic again

Higher than Kigali means thinner air and colder nights, and a heater sized on Kigali's numbers will underperform here. We recalculate on the lodge's actual elevation and add capacity, and we insulate harder than we would in the city — floor as well as walls, because these buildings sit on cold ground.

Night temperatures in Kinigi regularly fall into single figures. That is a gift for a cold plunge, which barely needs a chiller, and a warning for pipework, which needs to be run inside the insulated envelope.

Wood fire earns its place here

This is the one part of Rwanda where we actively recommend a wood-fired heater. Firewood is on site, the fire is part of the evening for guests who have been outdoors all day, and it works during a power cut — which matters more at a remote lodge than in the city.

Built for a turnaround, not a season

Gorilla trekking runs year-round, so there is no closed season to renovate in. We build in phases around occupancy, work in agreed windows, and keep the site clean enough that it can be in view of guests.
