Savannah dust and the plant room

Savannah dust clogs chiller condensers faster than anything else in the country. We fit washable pre-filters, place units out of the prevailing dust, and shorten the service interval to three months in the dry season. A chiller here that is serviced on a Kigali schedule will fail early.

Off-grid power and water

Most lodges here run on solar with generator backup and trucked or borehole water. That shapes everything: heaters and chillers are the two big loads, so we sequence them in the controls, size the plunge to the water budget, and supply an insulated lid that actually gets used, because evaporation in this climate is a real cost.

A useful rule at a solar lodge: keep the chiller and the filtration on the solar side, where they run through the day and draw little, and schedule the sauna for the evening window when the generator is already running for the kitchen. That keeps the battery bank a sensible size.

Akagera: plunge first, heat second

For most Akagera lodges we recommend building the plunge and a shaded rest area first, and adding a compact sauna later if guests ask. Coming back from a game drive in the heat of the afternoon, the cold water is the product; the sauna then works best as an evening room, once the heat has gone out of the day. Supply, installation, duty and VAT are included. A lodge planning a complete suite with plant room, documentation and a service contract should look at the 53 – 120 million band for a full lodge suite.

Access and delivery

Akagera lies roughly two and a half hours east of Kigali, through Rwamagana and Kayonza on paved road. Inside the park the roads are unpaved tracks, dusty in the dry season and heavy in the rains, and the park keeps set gate hours. Contractor access for a lodge inside the boundary is arranged with park management in advance, and we aim the lorry's arrival at the dry months of June to August wherever the programme allows.

Crates are sized for the park tracks rather than for the tarmac, and everything that arrives leaves again: packaging, offcuts and spare fixings go back out with the crew.

Can a lodge run a chiller on solar?

Yes, with the load sequenced and a battery that can carry the compressor's start. We work with your energy contractor on the numbers.

How often does a chiller need servicing out here?

Every three months in the dry season. Dust on the condenser is the main cause of failure in this part of Rwanda.

Can a plunge work without a chiller in Akagera?

Rarely. Afternoons here are hotter than in Kigali, so a shaded, insulated, lidded tub helps, but guests expecting cold water after a game drive need a chiller — ideally running on the solar side of the system.

What water should the plunge use?

Treated borehole or trucked water with filtration and an ozone stage, topped up rather than drained and refilled, and covered when not in use to cut evaporation.
