How the calculator works it out for Kigali
Heater: volume, altitude, glass
We start at 0.85 kW per cubic metre of insulated, timber-lined cabin, multiply by 1.12 for Kigali's altitude of about 1,450 m, and add roughly 0.42 kW for each square metre of glass, because glazing loses heat far faster than an insulated wall. The total is rounded up to the next heater we actually fit: 4.5, 6, 8, 9, 10.5, 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 kW.
Worked example: the four-person cabin is 2.0 × 2.4 m and about 10.1 m³. 10.1 × 0.85 × 1.12 = 9.6 kW; one full glass wall adds 5 m² × 0.42 = 2.1 kW; 11.7 kW rounds up to a 12 kW heater. The same cabin with solid walls takes 10.5 kW. The reasoning is set out in heater sizing at Kigali's altitude.
Power: single phase or three phase
Above about 8 kW the calculator shows a three-phase, 400 V supply; below that, a dedicated 230 V single-phase circuit is usually possible. REG charges the same RWF 56,000 meter fee for either (REG New Connection Policy), so the real cost is the cable from your board, which we quote separately. Cold plunge: litres decide the chiller
The tub volume picks the chiller: 1 HP up to about 260 litres, 2 HP up to about 570, 4 HP beyond. The 220-litre tub therefore gets 1 HP, the 420-litre tub 2 HP, and the 700- and 900-litre options 4 HP. Kigali's 16–17 °C nights mean the unit cycles less than it would in a hot lowland city.
Price: landed, with duty and VAT
The band is a landed, supplied-and-installed figure. EAC import duty — 0, 10, 25 or 35 per cent on the CIF value, depending on the item (trade.gov) — and 18% VAT (PwC Tax Summaries) are already inside, as are shipping via Mombasa or Dar es Salaam and installation by our own crew. Civil works and the cable from your board are not. The width of the band covers access, finish and site conditions we cannot see from a form: the four-person cabin with one glass wall and a 420-litre chilled tub, for example, shows about 7.7 – 10.7 million RWF.
